ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth overcame an early deficit to record its first Empire 8 Conference victory of the season in men's lacrosse Friday with a 18-12 victory over Hartwick.
The Golden Flyers were able to snap a three-game losing streak to improve to 4-7 overall and 1-1 in the E8. Hartwick dropped to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in conference games.
Jon Roth totaled eight points on five goals and two assists and
Brett Randall had seven points on four goals and three assists. The McKercher -- Braeden and Quinn -- brothers each scored three times and
Jeremy Jacob had two goals, including career tally No. 100.
Greg Bilek also had a goal and two assists.
Nazareth dominated the game statistically with advantages in shots (54-42), ground balls (49-22) and face-offs (25-9), but the Golden Flyers found themselves in an early deficit as Hartwick scored the game's first two goals. Nazareth answered with four straight goals to close out the first quarter with Roth scoring twice and then added the first goal of the second quarter for a 5-2 lead.
An eight-goal flurry in the second quarter, including three more goals for Roth and Jacob's 100th goal, put Nazareth in control with a 12-5 lead at the break. Nazareth scored four more times in the third quarter and Randall added the first two goals of the fourth quarter as the lead grew to 18-7. Hartwick scored the last five goals of the game to make the final score more respectable.
Nazareth ws especially opportunistic on extra-man as the Golden Flyers converted five times in seven attempts. The first goal of the game came with a man up as
Braeden McKercher scored off a pass from Randall. Roth scored twice with the second goal coming with Nazareth playing with a man down. Bilek also scored.
Nazareth scored three more man-up goals in the second quarter, including the goal by Jacob with 2:26 left in the period off an assist from
Braeden McKercher, who also scored twice in the period.
Hartwick had two goals in the third quarter to close within 13-7, but Nazaretrh countered with goals from Jacob, Randall and
Quinn McKercher -- with the last goal coming with :02 left in the quarter -- to erase any comeback aspirations for Hartwick.
Nazareth also received strong face-off play from freshman
Matt Keane, who won 24 of 33 draws and collected 14 ground balls.
Eric Almquist played all 60 minutres in goal and was credited with 12 saves and four ground balls.
The Golden Flyers are at home Wednesday for a 4 p.m. conference match with Alfred.
