ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Junior
Emma States scored four goals, including career tally No. 100, and added four assists for host Nazareth Saturday as the Golden Flyers closed their regular-season schedule with a 17-9 victory over Utica on Senior Day.
Nazareth improved to 7-9 overall and 5-1 in the Empire 8 Conference and secured the second seed for next weekend's conference tournament. The fallout is that Nazareth and third-seeded Utica will meet again the E8 semifinals at St. John Fisher Saturday at 2 p.m. Top-seeded St. John Fisher will play Hartwick in the other semifinal at 11 a.m. The championship game is Sunday at 12:30 p.m. Utica completed its regular-season schedule with a record of 11-3, including a 4-2 mark in conference games.
In addition to States, who now has 103 career goals as the 17th Nazareth player to reach that milestone,
Eleanor Matz had a career-best four points on three goals and one assist and
Emma Robinson also scored three times.
Liddie Hoare scored twice and
Maren Wallace,
Kate Metzler,
Hannah Kirisits,
Reva Mussi and
Maggie Vay also scored.
Utica went up 3-2 midway through the opening quarter, then Nazareth closed out the period with four straight goals to secure the lead for good. The Golden Flyers poured it on in the second quarter with five more goals to take a commanding 11-4 lead into halftime.
Vay's goal off an assist from Wallace tied the score with 4:11 left in the first quarter. Then Wallace scored unassisted with 2:57 left to give Nazareth the lead. States then added a pair of unassisted goals in a 28-second stretch late in the period for a 6-3 advantage.
Utca scored to open the second quarter and Nazareth answered with six straight goals, including a goal by States in the opening minute of the second half, for a 12-4 lead. Robinson scored twice in the second quarter and Matz produced her first goal of the game to go with a free-position goal by Metzler.
Utica scored in the third quarter to draw within 12-5, but Nazareth scored four more in a row to go up 16-5 and to keep the clock running. Matz scored twice in that span and Robinson and Hoare also scored.
Nazareth had advantages in shots (38-27), ground balls (16-12) and draw controls (21-8).
Emma Parry was dominant defensively again with a school-record 15 draw controls to go with six ground balls and four caused turnovers. Mussi added foru draw controls and
Lauren Caldwell had three ground balls.
Emma Prosak started in goal and had four saves.
Katie Lawrence had two saves in the second half.
Nazareth honored its seven seniors before the game -- Caldwell,
Megan Fiorentino, Kirisits, Lawrence, Parry, Prosak and Robinson,
