Nazareth upset bid falls short against St. Lawrence, 16-13

Golden Flyers (6-9 overall) close out regular-season schedule Saturday against Utica

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth went toe-to-toe with 13th-ranked St. Lawrence Tuesday in a non-conference women's lacrosse match, but in the end the Saints outscored Nazareth 3-1 in the fourth quarter to hold off the Golden Flyers for a 16-13 victory.

The upset-minded Golden Flyers dropped to 6-9 overall with one regular-season game left -- Saturday at home against Utica at 2:30 p.m. St. Lawrence won its eighth straight game to improve to 15-1 overall.

Emma States amassed seven points on five goals and two assists and stands one goal shy of 100 for her career. Maggie Vay added three goals and two assists amd Reva Mussi also scored twice and collected six draw controls. Maren Wallace, Emma Robinson and Kate Metzler also scored goals. Emma Parry had five draw controls and three caused turnovers.

Nazareth never led in the game, but managed to tie the score twice late in the game -- at 12-12 late in the third quarter and at 13-13 early in the fourth -- before the Saints secured the win by scoring the last three goals.

States' fifth goal of the game came off an assist from Vay with 2:23 left in the third quarter to tie the score at 12-12. The Saints' Charlotte Powell helped St. Lawrence regain the lead with a free-position goal with less than a second remaining in the period. Nazareth tied the score again on a goal by Metzler off a pass from Wallace with 13:06 left. SLU's Callie O'Neill untied the score for the final time with an unassisted tally just 22 seconds after Metzler's goal.

The Saints tacked on two more goals later in the period for the three-goal difference.

St. Lawrence scored the first four goals of the game, but Nazareth got goals from Wallace and States in the closing minute of the first period to make the score 4-2. The Saints also built a four-goal lead at 8-4 in the second quarter, but Robinson scored with :04 left in the half to make it 8-5.

Nazareth chipped away in the third quarter by outscoring the Saints 7-5 to make the game interesting. States scored three times and Mussi scored twice.

Nazareth had a 37-36 edge in shots and ground balls were in St. Lawrence's favor, 17-13. The Golden Flyers were stymied on free-position shots in going 0-for-6. Saints goalies Raelynn Bovenzi and Courtney Lynn combined to make 11 saves. Emma Prosak played the first half in goal for Nazareth and made one save. Katie Lawrence had five saves in the second half.
