Offense Recovers for Second Game Win against RIT

ROCHESTER, NY – After the first game of the doubleheader that the Nazareth College Softball team managed just three hits, the Golden Flyers recovered to score six times including five runs in the first two innings to salvage a split with RIT Tuesday afternoon.

RIT (7-21) won the opener 9-1 in five innings and Nazareth (16-16) rallied to win a 6-2 decision in the nightcap.

Sophomore Marissa Berghorn provided all of the offense in the opener with a solo home run off the foul pole down the left field line but RIT scored at least a run in every inning including three in the fifth to earn the eight-run rule win.

Sophomores Cassidy Hoffmier and Megan Pum had the other two hits for Nazareth.

In game two, the Golden Flyers jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first inning and two more in the second to take a 5-0 lead.

Senior Maddie Funk was solid in the circle as she scattered 12 hits and allowed just a pair of runs with two strike outs and no walks.

Berghorn doubled to drive in junior Justine Brooks for the first run and junior Hailie Bennett hit a bases loaded single to score two more runs as Nazareth scored all three runs in the inning with two outs.

Junior Brooke Hailston and Brooks led off the second inning with hits and Hoffmier walked to load the bases. Senior Sarah Simmons singled to drive one run in and Brooks advanced on a throwing error for the 5-0 Nazareth lead.

The Tigers narrowed the lead with single runs in the third and fourth innings before Nazareth added an insurance run in the fifth.

Pum doubled with one out to start the scoring effort in the fifth. With two outs, senior Jessica Klem singled to score Pum for the 6-2 lead.

Brooks was 2-for-3 with two runs and Klem finished with 2-for-4 with a run batted in to lead the offense.

The Golden Flyers have added a non-conference doubleheader against Elmira Sunday at Flyer Field starting at 1 p.m.
