Nazareth late rally falls short at UR, 15-13

Golden Flyers (2-6 overall) open conference play Wednesday at Alfred

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth outscored Rochester 7-5 in the second half Friday, but the Golden Flyers' late rally fell short in a non-conference women's lacrosse game against the Yellowjackets as UR won 15-13 at Fauver Stadium.

Despite a 4-2 scoring edge in the fourth quarter, Nazareth dropped to 2-6 overall, while Rochester improved to 5-4.

Emma States led Nazareth with four goals and Reva Mussi contributed three goals and one assist. Emma Robinson scored twice for the Golden Flyers, who got single tallies from Maren Wallace, Maggie Vay, Emily Paddock and Annie Rubel.

The Golden Flyers fell behind 10-3 late in the first half before rallying to score the last three goals before the break to close the gap to 10-6. Each team scored three times in the third quarter, but fourth-period goals by Mussi and Robinson within the first three minutes of the period brought Nazareth to within 13-11. Two UR goals enabled the Yellowjackets to regain their four-goal cushion, but Wallace scored on a free-position opportunity and States produced her fourth goal of the game with 2:06 left to make things interesting again.

The Golden Flyers had chances in the final two minutes, but a shot by States sailed high and another by Mussi bounced over the goal.

Nazareth outshot Rochester 31-27 overall, including 10-4 in the fourth quarter. Eleven of Nazareth's shots came on free-position chances, but the Golden Flyers converted only six of those. Rochester also had a 19-13 edge in draw controls.

Gracie Giannettino had four goals for Rochester, including two in the opening period as the Yellowjackets were building a 6-1 lead. Goals by Paddock and States in the closing minute trimmed the deficit to 6-3. UR, though, unleashed four straight goals over the first 12 minutes of the second quarter to take a 10-3 lead that proved to be insurmountable. States scored off a pair of free-position opportunities and Rubel also scored late in the half to make the score 10-6. Mussi scored twice in the third quarter and Vay also scored.

Nazareth's final stat line included eight draw controls, three ground balls and three caused turnovers for Emma Parry and five ground balls for Lauren Caldwell. States also had five caused turnovers and three ground balls. Katie Lawrence was credited with six saves in goal for Nazareth, while Ava Saffren had 11 for Rochester.

Nazareth's next game is Wednesday at Alfred in the teams' Empire 8 Conference opener at 4 p.m.
