Nazareth downs Elmira in 4 sets

Golden Flyers (17-6 overall) plays D'Youville next

ELMIRA, N.Y. – Graduate student Antonio Sargent knocked down a match-best 17 kills against just one hitting error on 26 attempts Wednesday as visiting Nazareth won a four-set men's volleyball match at Elmira. Scores were 25-23, 25-16, 22-25, 25-15.

The United Volleyball Conference victory enabled the Golden Flyers to even their league record at 2-2 and improve their overall record to 17-6. Elmira dipped to 11-10 overall and 1-3 in conference matches. It was Nazareth's second win of the season over the Soaring Eagles, the first coming in a non-conference setting.

Josh Weaver and Owen Wickens each produced nine kills and Trent Caviness had 36 assists to go with four kills and eight digs.

Sargent had five kills in the opening set as Nazareth surged to a 17-11 lead only to have Elmira come back to tie the set at 22-22. A pair of Elmira service errors sandwiched between a kill by Wickens doomed the Soaring Eagles as Nazareth prevailed by two points.

In the second set, the Golden Flyers hit a highly efficient .471 (10-2-17) with freshman Max Stuver delivering three kills and a service ace that extended Nazareth's lead to 23-15.

Sargent, Weaver and Wickens each had five kills in the third set, but Elmira produced 12 kills against just one hitting error to take the set.

In the fourth set, Nazareth cranked out four kills among the first five points to grab an early lead that was never relinquished. Two of the kills came from the powerful outside swing of Sargent, who totaled five more kills, boosting his career total to 963. Weaver and Colin Donahue also had kills as Nazareth secured the momentum.

Nazareth takes next week off during spring break and is back home March 23 for a non-conference match vs. D'Youville at 7 p.m.
