Nazareth sweeps MIT to clinch playoff berth

Golden Flyers (18-6 overall) visit St. John Fisher Wednesday

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Playing for the first time in 17 days, Nazareth's men's volleyball brushed of the cobwebs to complete a three-set sweep of visiting MIT in a key United Volleyball Conference match played at the Kidera Gymnasium. Nazareth won by scores of 25-22, 25-21, 25-19.

The victory clinched a playoff spot for the Golden Flyers in next month's six-team UVC Tournament. Nazareth improved 18-6 overall and 3-2 in conference matches. The Engineers also dropped a four-set match at St. John Fisher Friday and dropped to 11-8 overall and 1-5 in the UVC.

Antonio Sargent led Nazareth with 12 kills. Owen Wickens added 11 kills and Josh Weaver had eight. Trent Caviness contributed 24 assists and six digs.

The Golden Flyers fell behind in the opening set, 14-10, before rallying. A kill by Wickens tied the set at 18-18 and Weaver followed with a kill to give Nazareth a 19-18 lead. Max Stuver had a kill to give Nazareth a 23-21 lead, the Sargent recorded kills on the final two points.

In the second set, Nazareth had a 13-6 lead before MIT rallied. The Engineers used a 12-4 scoring run to take a 19-18 lead late in the set. The Golden Flyers regrouped as Colin Donahue had a pair of blocks, including one on set point as Nazareth prevailed. Sargent and Wickens each had three kills in the set.

MIT scored the first two points of the third set, but it was all Nazareth thereafter as the Golden Flyers surged to a lead of 17-8. Weaver delivered four of his kills as Nazareth gradually pulled away.

Nazareth's final stat line included 13 digs for Seth Terzo and a pair of service aces for Alex Bertino and Donahue finished with seven blocks.

The Golden Flyers have just two regular-season matches remaining -- Wednesday at St. John Fisher at 7 p.m. and Saturday at home against New Paltz at 1 p.m.
