Vay scores 5 goals as Nazareth outscores Oswego, 14-10

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Junior Maggie Vay scored a career-best five goals, including three in a decisive third quarter as Nazareth broke loose for a 14-10 women's lacrosse victory overt Oswego Wednesday on the Golden Flyers' artificial turf field.

The non-conference triumph was the second in a row for the Golden Flyers, who improved to 2-4 overall. Oswego dropped to 1-6.

Vay also had an assist in addition to her five goals. Emma Robinson had two goals and two assists and Reva Mussi and Emily Paddock each scored twice. Emma States, Maren Wallace and Hannah Kirisits also had goals. Emma Parry helped Nazareth gain possession with 12 draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Nazareth never trailed in the game, but Oswego was able to rally to tie the score twice int he second quarter. It was 5-5 late in the first half when Paddock scored her first goal of the season on a free-position shot with :55 left to give Nazareth the lead for good at 6-5 before the half.

Nazareth broke the game open with five goals in the third quarter to extend the lead to 11-5 before Oswego finally scored late in the period. Vay scored the first two goals of the period. Then States added an unassisted score, followed by another goal from Vay and another from Paddock.

Oswego stayed within striking distance in the fourth quarter, but Nazareth countered with goals from Mussi, Robinson and Kirisits to maintain a comfortable margin.

In the first quarter, Nazareth started strong as Mussi opened the scoring with an assist from Robinson and Vay scored less than two minutes later with hep from Wallace. Vay's second goal of the game at 8:25 made the scores 3-0. After two Oswego goals, Robinson scored off an assist from States in the closing minute of the quarter for ta 4-2 Nazareth lead.

The second quarter included goals from Wallace and Paddock, but Oswego kept it close with three goals.

Nazareth had advantages in shots (28-26) and ground balls (19-13) and converted 2-of-4 free-position tries with both goals coming from the stick of Paddock. Senior Katie Lawrence played well in goal with 12 saves for Nazareth. Jalia Quick was Oswego's high scorer with four goals.

Nazareth plays again Saturday at Geneseo at 1 p.m.
