ITHACA, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth scored six times in the fourth quarter at Ithaca Wednesday, but the Golden Flyers yielded the game-winning goal with 2:52 to play as the host Bombers prevailed in a non-conference men's lacrosse game, 15-14.
Quinn McKercher and
Braeden McKercher each scored three goals and
Brett Randall had two goals and three assists.
Jon Roth also scored twice for Nazareth, which slipped to 3-5 overall.
Greg Bilek,
Jeremy Jacob,
Quinn Conroy and
Andy Hamel also had goals. Ithaca improved to 7-1 overall.
The score was tied 7-7 at halftime, but Ithaca appeared to seize control in the third quarter by outscoring the Golden Flyers 6-1. Nazareth battled back in the fourth quarter as
Quinn McKercher scored all three of his goals and Randall scored twice. McKercher's third goal, off an assist from Randall, tied the score at 14-14 with 4:03 to go.
Ithaca won the ensuing face-off and Drew Turner scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 2:52 left.
Matt Keane won the next face-off for Nazareth and the Golden Flyers generated three shots during the impending possession --- one each for Jacob,
Quinn McKercher and Roth -- but they were unable to tie the score again.
Nazareth got first-period goals from Jacob, Conroy, Bilek and
Braeden McKercher, but still trailed 5-4 after 15 minutes. Second-period tallies from Hamel,
Braeden McKercher and Roth pivoted Nazareth to a 7-6 lead, but Ithaca scored with under six minutes left in the half to square the game at 7-7 before the half.
That set the stage for an offensively charged second half in which Ithaca dominated the third quarter and Nazareth the fourth.
Nazareth had advantages in shots (50-42), ground balls (29-27) and face-offs (23-11), featuring strong FOGO work by Keane, who won 22 of 32 draws and scooped up 14 ground balls.
Carson Pickeral played all 60 minutes in goal and was credited with 13 saves.
Nazareth is idle this weekend and next plays at home April 2 for the start of Empire 8 Conference play against St. John Fisher at 12 p.m.
