NEW PALTZ, N.Y. --
Annie Rubel's third goal of the game with 1:29 left in regulation proved to be the game-winner for visiting Nazareth Saturday as the Golden Flyers secured their first women's lacrosse victory of the season, 11-10, over New Paltz.
Following the first-ever meeting between the two schools in women's lacrosse, Nazareth improved to 1-4 overall and New Paltz dropped to 2-4.
Rubel's three goals were accompanied by one assist and
Emma States equaled a career-best with seven points on five goals and two assists to lead the Golden Flyers. States has now scored nine goals in the last two games.
Emma Robinson and
Maren Wallace each had one goal and one assist and
Liddie Hoare also scored.
Rubel's sixth goal of the season came on a free-position shot for an 11-10 Nazareth advantage. New Paltz had a couple of scoring chances in the closing minute, but senior goalie
Katie Lawrence made a pair of big saves to preserve the lead, including one as time expired. She finished with seven saves.
New Paltz led 9-8 heading into the fourth quarter, but Nazareth scored three times to rally for the win. States scored early in the period off an assist by
Maggie Vay, but New Paltz regained its one-goal lead less than two minutes later.
States then netted the tying goal off a pass from Wallace with 9:33 left to set the stage for Rubel's game-winner.
Desperate for their first win, the Golden Flyers got off to a good start by scoring the first three goals as Wallace, States and Robinson each tallied less than four minutes apart for a 3-0 advantage. New Paltz came back to score twice before the first period ended and the Hawks scored the first goal of the second quarter to tie the score.
Neither team led by more than one goal thereafter. Rubel's first two goals came within a 70-second span near the end of the first half that gave Nazareth a 6-5 edge through 30 minutes.
Hoare and States had Nazareth goals in the third quarter, but New Paltz scored four times to lead 10-9 with 15 minutes to go.
Nazareth finished with a 33-25 edge in shots and forced 20 New Paltz turnovers. Robinson had four draw controls for Nazareth and Rubel had three.
Emma Parry was credited with three caused turnovers.
Nazareth's next game is at home Wednesday vs. Oswego at 4 p.m.
