Nazareth falls short at Conn. College, 10-7

Golden Flyers (0-4 overall) visit New Paltz Saturday

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior Emma States had a season-best four goals for visiting Nazareth Thursday, but the Golden Flyers' collective effort fell short in a non-league women's lacrosse game at Connecticut College, 10-7.

The Golden Flyers remained winless at 0-4 following the first-ever meeting between the two schools in women's lacrosse. The Camels improved to 3-1.

In addition to States, Emma Robinson, Annie Rubel and Maren Wallace also scored goals and goalie Katie Lawrence had 12 saves. Nazareth had difficulty, though, possessing the ball as the Golden Flyers committed 24 turnovers, resulting in extended possessions for the Camels, who had advantages in shots (27-17), ground balls (18-17) and draw controls (14-6).

States, with just two goals in the Golden Flyers' first three games, scored the first goal of Thursday's game for a 1-0 Nazareth lead, but Conn College scored the next three goals of the first period to take a lead that was never relinquished.

Robinson and Wallace scored in the second quarter to tie the score at 3-3, but the Camels scored twice before halftime, including the fifth goal with just :31 left in the half, for a 5-3 advantage.
Rubel's goal came late in the third period, but the Camels still led 7-4 heading into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter started promisingly for the Golden Flyers as States scored twice in a 57-second stretch to draw Nazareth within 7-6. The Camels answered twice to create some insurmountable separation with less than six minutes to play. States scored her fourth goal with 1:10 left, but Nazareth was unable to control the ensuing draw as the Camels ran out the clock and tacked on an insurance goal with :01 left.

Robinson, Wallace and Maggie Vay each collected assists for the Golden Flyers, who play again Saturday at New Paltz in search of their first win at 12 p.m.
