NAPLES, FL – Senior Sarah Simmons went 5-for-7 with four runs and two runs batted in while a trio of pitchers combined for 22 strikeouts as the Nazareth College Softball team recorded a pair of 9-1 wins Monday on the second day of the annual Spring Training trip to Florida.

Playing at the North Collier Park facility, the Golden Flyers (3-1) downed the University of Maine-Presque Isle and then defeated SUNY Delhi in six innings bit by 9-1 scores.

Against Maine, Nazareth allowed a run in the third inning to break a scoreless tie but the Golden Flyers responded with three runs in the fourth to take the lead for good. Nazareth added a run in the fifth, three more in the sixth and capped the scoring with two more runs in the top of the seventh.

Simmons was 2-for-4 and fellow senior Jessica Klem added a 2-for-3 game at the plate. Klem added a pair of runs and sophomore Marissa Berghorn also scored twice for Nazareth.

The combination of senior Maddie Funk and junior Emily Daciw split the effort and combined for 14 K's and just one walk with four hits and one run.

In the second game of the day, Nazareth took an early lead with a run in the first but SUNY Delhi tied the game in the bottom of the inning. The Golden Flyers regained the lead with single runs in the second and third innings before breaking the game open in the fifth with a pair of runs and then tacked on four more in the sixth to take the eight-run lead.

The Broncos did not score in the sixth and Nazareth won with the eight-run rule.

Sophomore Cassidy Hoffmier, Berghorn and Simmons each finished with three hits while junior Justine Brooks and freshman Maggie Burdick added two hits each as Nazareth pounded out 15 hits in the game. Burdick led Nazareth with three runs batted in.

Freshman starter Cat Moores allowed just one run in the first and did not allow another run the rest of the way as she recorded eight strikeouts and just one hit over the final five innings for her first career win.
