ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A slow start doomed host Nazareth Tuesday in an Empire 8 women's basketball game against St. John Fisher. The 23
rd-ranked Cardinals scored a 64-42 victory over the Golden Flyers on Mike Daley Court at the Kidera Gymnasium.
St. John Fisher defeated the Golden Flyers for the second time this season to improve to 20-2 overall and 12-1 in the E8. Nazareth dropped its second in a row and dropped to 13-8 overall and 8-4 in conference games.
Kim Davis led Nazareth with her seventh double-double of the season as she combined 16 points with 13 rebounds.
Miyah Sizer added 12. Nazareth's offensive woes were compounded by a scoreless night for
Jadyn Abrams, the conference's leading scorer at 16.5 points per game coming in. She misfired on her only three field goal attempts and missed two free throws as well.
Nazareth scored just one first-quarter point – a free throw by
Sabrina Wolfe – as the Golden Flyers missed all 15 of their shots from the field and trailed 12-1. Fisher was only 2-for-15 from the floor, but the Cardinals went 7-for-7 from the free throw line.
Davis made Nazareth's first basket – a three-pointer with 8:14 left in the second quarter – after 17 misses. The score was 17-1 before that occurred. Davis had seven points in the second quarter, but Nazareth still trailed 34-18 at the break.
Nazareth closed the gap to 47-36 after three quarters, thanks to a pair of three-pointers by Davis, one from
Miyah Sizer and one from
Madilann Johnson.
Nazareth was unable to draw any closer in the fourth quarter as Fisher pulled away for the victory by outscoring the Golden Flyers 17-6.
Miyah Sizer had six rebounds and three assists in addition to her 12 points. Wolfe had six points and eight rebounds.
The Golden Flyers play two more conference games this weekend – Friday at Utica at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday at home against Keuka at 2 p.m.
