UTICA, NY – The Nazareth College Women's Basketball team scored 29 points in the final quarter to come-from-behind and defeat Utica 67-62 and in doing so, clinched the final playoff spot in the Empire 8 Tournament.
Nazareth (14-8 overall, 9-4 E8) came finish as high as No. 2 in the conference standings but are secured with at least a top-four finish and a chance to play in the Empire 8 Tournament.
The victory was also the 100th career win for Head Coach Kelly Dunne. The sixth-year head coach now has an overall record of 100-61.
The Golden Flyers trailed 47-38 entering the final quarter but battled back and took a lead on a 3-point basket by sophomore Chelsea Woodsum with just under three minutes to play. After Utica (18-4, 9-4) regained the lead with an inside shot but graduate student Sabrina Wolfe sank another 3-pointer to give Nazareth the lead for good.
Senior Jadyn Abrams hit an inside jumper and then added a three-point play with another inside shot and free throw to give the Golden Flyers a 65-60 edge with 33 seconds remaining.
The Pioneers trimmed the lead to three points with a rebound and basket but Abrams and senior Makalah Sizer each hit free throws to secure the victory.
Abrams led Nazareth with 22 points and added 11 rebounds for a double-double while senior Miyah Sizer added 15 and Wolfe chipped in 14 points and had a team-best eight assists for the Golden Flyers. Senior Kim Davis scored six and grabbed 11 rebounds.
Nazareth returns home Saturday for senior day against Keuka with a 2 p.m. start at Kidera Gymnasium.
