PITTSBURGH -- Nazareth, ranked 12th nationally in men's volleyball, made short work of a pair of non-conference opponents Saturday as the Golden Flyers swept Wittenberg and Thiel in three tidy sets at the Steel City Freeze Tournament at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
The Golden Flyers improved to 11-1 overall and ran their winning streak to six matches. They downed Wittenberg by scores of 25-22, 25-20, 25-11 and Thiel by scores of 25-16, 25-22, 25-19.
Grad student
Antonio Sargent had another impressive day from his outside hitting position as he totaled 26 kills in the two matches.
Owen Wickens also filled up the stat sheet with 14 total kills and 53 assists.
Seth Terzo had 17 digs.
Sargent knocked down a match-best 17 kills against Wittenberg for a .517 hitting percentage and Wickens combined 29 assists with seven kills, three aces, six digs and four blocks. Seven of Sargent's kills came in the opening set and six more came in the second as Nazareth took a commanding lead in the match. Wittenberg drew within 21-20 late in the second set before Nazareth closed the set by scoring the last four points, including a service ace from
Trent Caviness on the 25th point.
Nazareth surged to a 6-0 lead in the third set and were never challenged thereafter. The set included three more aces for Wickens and two each for Caviness and
Jonathon Jackson.
Nazareth's overall stat line included a .298 hitting percentage (39-11-94). Terzo had 11 digs,
Nate Allen had five kills and
Josh Weaver had four.
Nazareth was dominant against Thiel as well in posting a .337 hitting percentage (43-14-86) with nine kills for Sargent, eight from freshman
Andrew Bodensteiner and seven from Wickens. Wickens and Caviness split the setting responsibilities with Wickens totaling 24 and Caviness 18.
Sargent, Bodensteiner and Colin Doanhue each had three kills in the first set. Then Sargent, Caviness, Wickens and Donahue all had three kills in the second set. Bodensteiner had four more kills to carry the third set.
Nazareth finishes up the tournament on sunday against Mt. Union at 12 p.m.
