Rugby Splits Weekend Matches to Open 7’s Season

LANCASTER, PA -- Junior Kyhree Poole and sophomore Tyreek Thomas each scored trys to lead the Nazareth College Rugby team to a split of its three games Saturday at the season opening Fristbite 7's Tournament in Pennsylvania.

In the first match of the day against Temple, Poole, who transferred to Nazareth during the semester break scored twice to give Nazareth (1-2) an early lead as the Golden Flyers took a 14-0 edge after the first half of play.

Temple scored early in the second half to cut the lead in half but Thomas completed a run that was started by a steal for freshman Brendan O'Neill to give Nazareth a 21-7 lead.

Nazareth held on for the victory with tough defense down the stretch to move to 1-0 on the season.

In the second match of the afternoon against Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), Thomas scored early to give Nazareth a 5-0 lead. Poole scored his third try of the day later in the first half to extend the lead to 12-0 but IUP scored late in the half to trim the lead to 12-7 at the break.

After a hard fought second half, IUP scored late in the period to escape with a 14-12 victory.

In the final match of the day, Nazareth faced a tough American International College (AIC) team and took the early lead for the third consecutive match as O'Neill score to give the Golden Flyers a 7-0 lead.

AIC scored three times in the first half to take a 19-7 lead and then added four more trys in the second half for the 45-7 win.
