ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth, ranked 13th nationally in men's volleyball, split a pair of non-conference men's volleyball matches Saturday as the Golden Flyers had an eight-match winning streak snapped by seventh-ranked Rutgers-Newark in the second match.
Nazareth defeated SUNY Poly on Saturday morning in efficient fashion by scores of 25-19, 25-18, 25-21 for their second win of the season over the Wildcats. In the evening match, Nazareth lost in three sets to the Scarlet Knights by scores of 25-20, 25-20, 29-27. Nazareth is now 13-2 overall, while Rutgers-Newark improved to 6-1. Nazareth plays another match Sunday morning against Baldwin Wallace at 11 a.m. That will be followed by a match between Baldwin Wallace and SUNY Poly at 1 p.m.
Against the Wildcats, Nazareth posted a .321 collective hitting percentage (40-14-81) as
Owen Wickens led the way with 12 kills to go with five aces and six digs.
Antonio Sargent added 10 kills and
Trent Caviness had 23 assists and three aces.
Nazareth had 16 kills in the opening set against just two hitting errors for a .538 percentage. Wickens delivered five kills and two aces to set the tone ad Sargent added four kills. Wickens added five more kills in the second set and Caviness had two aces for a commanding lead. Sargent produced five more kills in the third set and
Nate Allen served up a pair of aces, including one on match point.
Nazareth's final stat line included four kills each for
Colin Donahue and
Josh Weaver and nine assists and five digs for
Max Stuver.
Against Rugers-Newark, the Scarlet Knights dominated the first two sets as Nazareth had difficulty getting untracked. In the third set, Nazareth had leads of 14-7 and 18-12 before Rutgers-Newark rallied. The Scarlet Knights finally caught up and tied the set at 22-22. The tie extended to 27-27, then the match ended on an attack error by Wickens and a Rutgers-Newark service ace.
Wickens finished with nine more kills plus five aces to raise his season total to 51 in 50 sets played. Sargent added six kills and Donahue and
Andrew Bodensteiner each had four. Caviness had 23 assists.
