Second Half Surge Leads Nazareth Past Thiel

DAYTONA BEACH, FL – Graduate student Jadyn Abrams and freshman Brielle Reidinger each scored 14 points to lead the Nazareth Women's Basketball team to a convincing 73-32 win over Thiel College Monday on the first day of competition at the Mauro Panaggio Memorial Tournament at the DME Sports Academy.

Nazareth (5-3) will face SUNY Brockport at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the tournament championship game. Thiel (2-7) will take on Elmhurst in the 11 a.m. consolation game. Brockport downed Elmhurst by a 60-53 score.

Reidinger led the Golden Flyers with a strong first half as she netted a team-leading nine points in the first 20 minutes of action and Nazareth took a 33-19 lead into the intermission.

Thiel had cut the Nazareth lead to seven points in the second quarter but after a Nazareth time out, the Golden Flyers went on a 7-0 run sparked by a three-point play for Reidinger and capped by a rebound and basket by Abrams.

In the third quarter, Nazareth scored the first seven points to extend the lead as graduate students Sarah Simmons and Kim Davis combined for the seven points as Simmons nailed a 3-pointer and Davis hit back-to-back jumpers for the 21-point lead.

After a Tomcat basket, Abrams hit a long two-point jumper and a 3-pointer and graduate student Caley Cornwell added a jumper for another 7-0 run to extend the lead to 26 points at 47-21.

Reidinger closed out the half with a layup and then hit all three free throws after being fouled on a long jump shot attempt as the shot clock was about to expire and Nazareth led 56-28 after three periods.

The Golden Flyers used the entire bench in the final quarter and freshmen Brayden Schultz (four points) and Molly Benetti (six points) combined for 10 points as the Golden Flyers outscored Thiel 17-4 over the final 10 minutes of play.

Reidinger added a team-leading eight rebounds and Abrams added seven rebounds for the Golden Flyers.
