Camille Wright scored seven of the last 11 points to help Nazareth pull away late in the fourth quarter for a 61-52 victory over Morrisville on Tuesday in the Golden Flyers home-opener. In addition, graduate student
Jadyn Abrams hit one 3-pointer in the game, tying her with Sam Sorge for the all-time career mark at Nazareth with 188 triples.
Nazareth improves to 2-3 on the season with the win, while Morrisville drops to 2-4.
In a tightly contested game from the start, Nazareth was finally able to break away from the Mustangs with under two minutes to play. Wright, who went 5-for-6 from the free throw line down the stretch, hit a pair of free throws at 1:33 to make it 56-51. Following an empty trip and a pair of free throws from
Caley Cornwell, the visitors scored their last bucket of the game with just over a minute to play to come within six, but that was as close as they would come. Cornwell added 12 points (5-for-14), 12 rebounds, and three assists in the winning effort.
Both teams came out cold from 3-point land to open the game, however,
Katie MacLachlan hit the first 3-pointer at the 1:33 mark to give Naz an 11-10 lead.
The Golden Flyers built their largest lead of the half, 22-16, behind a pair of buckets from graduate student
Kim Davis. After the visitors scored the next six points, MacLachlan stole a pass and found Cornwell for a last-second bucket. Nazareth led 24-22 at the break.
Abrams record-tying 3-pointer came near the eight minute mark of the second. She finished the game with 11 points (5-for-11) and three assists.
Nazareth struggled from the field over the first two quarters, going 9-for-32 (28.1 percent) from the field, while Morrisville went 9-for-27 (33.3 percent). Each team connected on two 3-pointers and combined to go 4-for-25 from 3-point land.
Both squads had better rhythm in the third, with Naz hitting 7-for-16 (43.6 percent) and the Mustangs going 7-for-15 (46.7 percent) to make the score 43-42 heading into the final quarter. Davis added a double-double with 10 points on 4-for-8 from the field, while grabbing 10 boards and adding a game-high five assists.
Nazareth will open up Empire 8 play Friday, hosting Elmira College at 5:30 p.m. in Kidera Gymnasium.
