ROCHESTER, NY – The Nazareth women's basketball team made just six field goals in the second and third quarters and could not make up the ground in the fourth, falling 70-60 to RIT Thursday night in the opening game of the Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout hosted at the University of Rochester. Freshman
Kiara Anglin led the way for the Golden Flyers with a career-high 14 points.
Nazareth will be back in action on Saturday, taking on the University of Rochester at 8 p.m.
The Golden Flyers built an 18-11 lead after the first quarter behind 7-for-14 from the field. Anglin notched seven of her 14 points in the opening quarter.
It was a miserable shooting performance in the second quarter from the Golden Flyers, as they made just two of 15 field goals (13.33 %) which allowed the Tigers to take a 33-25 lead into the break.
That lead blossomed to 59-39 after the third quarter with another tough shooting performance from the Golden Flyers (4-for-22).
Nazareth put together its best quarter of the night in the fourth, outscoring RIT 21-11, but it was a little too late to mount the comeback. A slow chipping away allowed Nazareth to eventual draw to within 10 points on a free throw from Brielle Reiding with seven seconds to play. She ended the contest with a game-high 14 rebounds in just 22 minutes of play.
Graduate student
Sarah Simmons notched 13 points on 5-for-11 from the field, with four rebounds and two assists.
Caley Cornwell was also in double-digits with 11 points (4-for-9) and six rebounds.
