Nazareth cruises past Russell Sage, 70-47

Golden Flyers (7-5 overall) visit Elmira Friday

ALBANY, N.Y. – Less than 24 hours after having a five-game winning streak snapped at Hartwick, Nazareth bounced back admirably Saturday against Russell Sage as the Golden Flyers secured a 70-47 road victory over the Gators in Empire 8 Conference action.

Nazareth improved to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play after salvaging the weekend split of E8 games. Russell Sage, which fell to St. John Fisher Friday, is 4-7 overall and 0-2 in league play.

Sabrina Wolfe led all scorers with 21 points for Nazareth, which had four players score in double figures. She also collected nine rebounds. Kim Davis posted a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Chelsea Woodsum came off the bench to produce a season-high 12 points and Caley Cornwell added 10.

Despite 15 first-half turnovers, Nazareth was able to forge ahead thanks to the outside shooting of Wolfe, who scored 13 of her points with three three-point baskets as Nazareth led 34-22 through 20 minutes. The Golden Flyers led by as many as 17 points in the first half with as little as 1:30 to play following a three-pointer from freshman Madilann Johnson, but the Gators scored the last five points of the half to close the gap.

In the third quarter, Cornwell scored eight of her points (with two three-pointers) as Nazareth's lead grew as large as 23 points, 52-29, with 2:50 left. The Gators closed the period with six straight points, but the Golden Flyers were in control with a 52-36 lead.

Woodsum emerged to score nine of her points, including a three-pointer, in the fourth quarter and Davis and Wolfe each added four as Nazareth continued to pull away.

Nazareth shot well from the field in hitting 29 of 64 shots (45.3%) with eight three-point baskets. Wolfe went 8-for-12, Davis 6-for-7 and Woodsum 5-for-8.

Nazareth is on the road again Friday to play Elmira at 5:30 p.m., then return home Saturday to host Utica at 2 p.m.
