Hartwick outscores Nazareth, 66-62

Golden Flyers (6-5 overall) visit Russell Sage Saturday at 2 p.m.

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Host Hartwick outscored Nazareth 14-10 in the fourth quarter Friday to surge past the Golden Flyers for a 66-62 women's basketball victory in Empire 8 Conference action at Lambros Arena.

Nazareth had its five-game winning streak snapped as the Golden Flyers dropped to 6-5 overall and 1-1 in the Empire 8. Hartwick improved to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The Golden Flyers return to the hardwood Saturday for another E8 game at Russell Sage at 2 p.m.

The score was tied 52-52 after three quarters and Nazareth scored the first five points of the fourth quarter -- a free throw by Miyah Sizer, two free throws by Jadyn Abrams and a basket by Sabrina Wolfe -- to take a 57-52 lead. Two free throws by Caley Cornwell made the score 59-54 with less than four minutes left. Another basket by Abrams and a free throw by Wolfe kept the Golden Flyers clinging to a 62-60 lead with less than a minute to play.

The Golden Flyers didn't score again as Hartwick's Mikyla Mitchell hit a field goal with :48 left and free throw with :14 to give the Hawks the lead for good at 63-62. Three more free throws in the closing seconds sealed the win for the Hawks.

The Hawks used a balanced offensive attack to secure the victory as five players scored in double figures, led by Molly Kirby, who had 16 points, four assists and four steals. Abrams paced the Golden Flyers with a season-high 27 points. She went 8-for-14 from the field with three three-pointers and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Sabrina Wolfe added 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists and Kim Davis and Miyah Sizer each had nine points.

The game was tied 17-17 through one quarter, then Hartwick forged ahead 40-34 by halftime. Nazareth outscored Hartwick 18-12 in the third quarter to tie the score at 52-52 heading into the final 10-minute period.
