MARCY, N.Y. -- Nazareth won a pair of three-set men's volleyball matches Saturday to complete a successful weekend at SUNY Poly's Wildcat Invitational to improve to 7-1 overall.
The Golden Flyers defeated the host Wildcats by scores of 25-19, 25-5, 25-17 and then Mt. St. Joseph's of Cincinnati, Ohio by scores of 25-29, 25-19, 25-18. Nazareth also won a four-set match Friday over Lasell and dropped a four-setter to 10th-ranked Wentworth.
Grad student
Antonio Sargent dominated the match against SUNY Poly by delivering a match-high 12 kills on 14 swings from the outside hitter position. Freshman
Josh Weaver added six kills and sophomore
Owen Wickens had 21 assists and six service aces.
The second set was particularly lopsided as Nazareth knocked out 10 kills on 15 swings. Nazareth led 9-2 and then rattled off 11 straight points, including four aces by Wickens.
Against Mt. St. Joseph, Sargent had 13 kills, while Wickens and freshmen
Andrew Bodensteiner and
Alex Bertino had nine kills each. Bertino and
Trent Caviness each had three service aces and Wickens amassed 31 more assists.
Nazareth is back on the road next Saturday for two matches at Elms College in Massachusetts. The Golden Flyers play Colby-Sawyer at 2 p.m. and Elms at 4.
