Volleyball Splits Matches at SUNY Poly Tournament

UTICA, NY – Graduate student Antonio Sargent registered 14 kills and sophomore Owen Wickens had 31 assists and five aces to lead the Nazareth College Men's Volleyball team past Lasell University in four sets to open the SUNY Poly Tournament Friday. The Golden Flyers dropped a late 3-1 decision to Wentworth Institute for its first loss of the season.

Nazareth (5-1) downed Lasell (0-4) by set scores of 25-19, 25-20, 27-29 and 25-23. Wentworth (1-0) posted a win by scores of 25-20, 20-25, 25-13, 25-13.

After Nazareth won the first two sets against Lasell, the Lasers rallied for a 29-27 win in the third set. The Golden Flyers came out quick in the fourth set with an early five-point run that included four aces by Wickens.

Lasell battled back and took a lead midway through the set as the teams traded points for nearly the remainder of the set. With Lasell leading 22-21, junior Nate Allen connected on a hard kill to tie the score and fellow junior Colin Donahue added a kill to give Nazareth a lead.

The teams traded points to make the score 24-23 Nazareth before Donahue and Allen combined for a block to close out the set and match.

Sargent added 10 digs to his 14 kills total for a double-double while Wickens chipped in 11 digs. Donahue had eight kills and freshman Max Stuver had 10 digs.

In the Wentworth match, Allen led Nazareth with eight kills, Wickens had 20 assists while junior Seth Terzo, Allen and Stuver each had six digs to lead the defense.

Nazareth will face host SUNY Poly and Mount St. Joseph Saturday to complete play at the tournament.
