Early Deficit Too Much to Overcome for Field Hockey

BROCKPORT, NY – Freshman Hannah Janes scored her first career goal in the third quarter for the Nazareth College Field Hockey team as the Golden Flyers narrowed the scoring gap to 3-1 but SUNY Brockport added two late goals for a 5-1 victory Tuesday night.

Brockport (3-0) scored three times in the first quarter to take an early lead with one goal coming off a penalty corner.

The teams played a scoreless second quarter and the Golden Flyers (1-2) came out with more offensive pressure in the second half.

Janes redirected a ball into the back of the cage as junior Bailey Selman sent in the hard pass for the Nazareth goal.

Late in the third quarter, Brockport extended the lead to 4-1 and then scored 2:30 into the final quarter for the final score.

After Brockport had a 6-0 lead in shots in the opening 15 minutes, Nazareth was even with 11 shots each over the final three periods. The Golden Flyers also had 10 penalty corners in the second half and held a 13-7 edge in corners for the game.

Senior Amanda Chuttey made nine saves including five in the third quarter.

Nazareth returns home Saturday to open Empire 8 action at 1 p.m. against Russell Sage.
