Two Quick Goals for Nazareth in Empire 8 Opener Win

ROCHESTER, NY – Juniors Grace Wasileski and Caroline Desautels each scored goals in the first 1:05 of the game for the Nazareth College Field Hockey team as the Golden Flyers took a 3-1 victory over Russell Sage Saturday in the first Empire 8 Conference game of the season for each team.

Nazareth (2-2 overall, 1-0 E8) scored early as Wasileski intercepted a pass and dribbled past four defenders before driving toward the cage and sending a hard low shot past the Russell Sage (1-3, 0-1) goalie. The unassisted goal was her first of the season.

Off the restart, freshman Madison Chodkowski intercepted a pass near midfield and sent a pass forward to fellow freshman Bella Rehermann who then sent a ball into the circle to the stick of junior Bailey Selman. Selman fired a shot on goal that was saved by Gator goalie Abigayle Greier but Desautels was in the right spot to collect the rebound and send the ball to the back of the cage for the 2-0 lead.

Nazareth added to its lead midway through the second quarter when Rehermann scored and Selman picked up her team-leading fifth assist of the season.

Sage scored in the third quarter to break up the shutout. The shot on goal was the first of the game for Sage who finished with two shots on the day. Nazareth had a 29-2 lead in shots as Greier made 16 saves for the Gators.

Nazareth was scheduled to play Medaille Sept. 17 with its next game but the game has been postponed. The Golden Flyers are scheduled to play St. John Fisher on the road Sept. 22.
