Two Late Goals Drop Field Hockey at St. John Fisher

PITTSFORD, NY –After an unusual 11 days off since its last game, the Nazareth College Field Hockey team used a strong defensive effort to play three scoreless quarters against St. John Fisher Wednesday night in Growney Stadium.

The Cardinals (3-3 overall, 1-0 Empire 8) scored early in the fourth quarter and then added an insurance goal in the final two minutes to take a 2-0 victory.

Senior goalie Amanda Chuttey and the Nazareth (2-3, 1-1 E8) defenders played solid defense and Chuttey made eight saves in the first 45 minutes to keep the game scoreless.

Nazareth had its best scoring chance in the third quarter with a rush up the field on a pair of long passes that ended up on the stick of junior Caroline Desautels. As Desautels raced in alone on the goal, the Cardinal goalie came far off her line and slid to break up the play and prevent her from firing a shot.

At the end of the third quarter, St. John Fisher applied pressure and had a pair of shots in the final five seconds but Chuttey turned aside both shots for Nazareth.

St. John Fisher opened the scoring in the first two minute of the final quarter with a long hard shot from the top of the arc off a penalty corner. The shot was sent into the lower corner of the goal.

The Cardinals added to the lead with 1:22 left to play as a shot from the top of the arc was moving wide of the goal before it was tipped in for the 2-0 lead.

St. John Fisher held an 18-2 lead in shots and an 11-2 edge in shots on goal with a 6-1 lead in penalty corners for the game. Chuttey finished with nine saves.

The Golden Flyers travel to Troy, NY to face Rensselaer Saturday in a non-conference game and will play at SUNY Geneseo Tuesday.
