ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting Cortland scored three times in the second half Saturday to break open a scoreless game as the Red Dragons pulled out a 3-1 women's soccer victory over Nazareth at Golden Flyer Stadium.
The non-conference victory evened the Red Dragons' record at 1-1, while Nazareth dropped to 0-1-1. The Golden Flyers are home again Monday for another non-conference game against Rochester at 12 p.m.
In a closely contested game, Cortland was able to strike three times in an eight-minute stretch of the second half and the Golden Flyers couldn't recover.
The first goal came in the 66th minute directly off a corner kick taken by Simone Neivel. Less than a minute later, Cortland's Jaden Galluzzo stole the ball from a Nazareth defender and beat Nazareth keeper
Gabrielle Pighetti with a low shot to the left side of the net. The third goal also came off the right foot of Neivel, who blasted a shot from about 25 yards out and into the left side of the goal.
Nazareth fought commendably to come back and the Golden Flyers finally got on the board in the 82nd minute after a foul in the penalty area.
Kristen Prohaska converted the subsequent penalty kick, but Nazareth still trailed 3-1.
The Golden Flyers had six corner kicks in the second half and could not capitalize. Pighetti finished with three saves in goal, while Kiersten Becker had nine saves for the Red Dragons.
The victory also enabled the Red Dragons to regain the lead, 15-14, in the overall series between the two schools that dates to 1987.
