CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Nazareth overcame a slow start in women's volleyball Friday as the Golden Flyers were victorious in their season opener by beating St. Lawrence in four sets at Cortland's Red Dragons Invitational. Scores were 21-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-17.
The Golden Flyers play two more matches Saturday -- at 12 p.m. vs. Arcadia and at 2 p.m. against Cortland.
Junior
Kaylee Kelly led the Golden Flyers with 14 kills against three hitting errors on 33 swings. She also had 11 digs. Freshmen
Tessa Grover and
Zoe Tylipakis did most of the setting for the Golden Flyers and combined for 34 assists. Grover added six kills and 11 digs and Tylipakis delivered seven service aces. Sophomore
Jillian Panek had six kills and senior
McKenzie Hart had a match-best 18 digs.
Opening match jitters may have played a role in the slow start as Nazareth fell behind 10-2 in the opening set. The Golden Flyers rallied to take a 17-16 advantage, but St. Lawrence scored the next three points and never trailed again in closing out the set.
Nazareth rallied to dominate the next three sets. The second set was tied at 19-19, but a kill by Grover gave the Golden Flyers the lead fo good at 21-20. Kelly had four of her kills and five of her digs in the set.
The third set was tied at 15-15, before Nazareth scored the next four points and closed out the set with a 10-2 scoring run. Kelly went 5-for-5 in attack attempts.
Nazareth used a seven-point scoring run to pull away in the fourth and final set. The score was 13-11 before Nazareth surged to a 20-11 advantage. Tylipakis spearheaded the decisive run with two kills and two service aces. Panek and sophomore
Abby Hannel each added two kills in the set.
