Second-half flurry lifts Nazareth past Alfred, 17-7

ALFRED, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth scored 11 straight goals between the third and fourth quarters Tuesday to surge past Alfred in an Empire 8 Conference game in men's lacrosse. Senior Jeremy Jacob scored four goals and added four assists as the Golden Flyers pulled away for 17-7 victory.

The loss was the first of the season for the Saxons, who stand at 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the Empire 8. Nazareth won for the second straight time to improve to 3-5 overall and 2-0 in conference games.

In addition to Jacob, junior midfielder Jon Roth scored four times and freshman attackman Quinn McKercher had three goals and two assists. Junior Jon Parrinello and sophomore Clifford Pollard each scored twice. The Golden Flyers also benefited from good face-off results from freshman Mike Herrera, who won 21 of 26 draws and collected 16 ground balls. Sophomore goalie Carson Pickeral had a career-best 14 saves, including six in the first quarter and four in the fourth.

The game was tight for the first 35 minutes or so. Alfred scored the first two goals of the third quarter to take a 7-6 lead, but the Saxons never scored again. Jacob scored off an assist from Quinn Conroy to tie the score with 6:43 left in the third and Jack McOsker delivered the go-ahead goal just 37 seconds later and the Golden Flyers poured it on from there.

Jacob added a goal and assisted on tallies by Parrinello and Roth before the third quarter ended to put Nazareth up 11-7.

Nazareth dominated the fourth quarter by scoring six more times with McKercher scoring twice and Roth Jacob, Parrinello and Pollard once each.

In the meantime, Pickeral remained sharp in goal in holding the Saxons scoreless for the final 22:15. In addition to his 14 saves, he and Owen Gonzalez each scooped up five ground balls.

In the first half, Nazareth had leads of 2-0, 4-2 and 6-4, but the Saxons stayed close and tied the score at 2-2 and 4-4 and closed to within 6-5 at halftime on a goal with just 19 seconds left in the second quarter. Roth had two goals in the first half, Pollard, Jacob, McKercher and Cole Moore one each.

Nazareth resumes its Empire 8 Conference schedule Saturday at St. John Fisher at 1 p.m.
