ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth scored the game's first 11 goals Wednesday as the Golden Flyers were never seriously challenged in a 23-4 women's lacrosse victory over Houghton on the artificial turf field.
Nazareth defeated the Highlanders for the ninth straight -- and possibly last -- time to improve to 5-4 overall and 4-0 in the Empire 8. Houghton, which announced that it it dropping women's lacrosse after the 2021 season, is 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the E8.
Emma States had three goals and three assists and
Emma Robinson had three goals and one assist as the Golden Flyers were able to empty the bench early in the first half.
Regan McGwin,
Callahan Lyon,
Maren Wallace,
Kate Metzler and
Caraline Riley all scored two goals each.
Robinson and States scored 20 seconds apart early in the first half. Then Lyon and Robinson added goals before the game was five minutes old. The lead swelled to 11-0 on a goal by McGwin with just under 15 minutes to play in the half before Houghton finally got on the scoreboard. Seniors
Vicki Arena and
Jordan Knapp were among the Nazareth goal scorers before the first half ended with the Golden Flyers on top 15-1.
In the second half,
Hannah Kirisits scored unassisted, the States converted a pair of free-position chances to extend Nazareth's lead. The second half also included the first goal of the season for
Hannah Dlugosz and the first career goal for freshman
Chloe LaDuc. McGwin, Wallace and
Tori Blazey also had goals.
Katie Lawrence played the first half in goal and
Emma Prosak played the second. Arena's stats also included six draw controls. Lyon, McGwin and States each had three assists.
Nazareth resumes its Empire 8 Conference schedule Saturday at Utica at 12 p.m.
