ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore Henry McKinney and junior Grant Gallo each scored first period goals for the Nazareth College Men's Hockey team as the Golden Flyers took an early lead but Stevenson University responded with three goals in each of the final two periods to post a 6-3 victory in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) game Saturday at the Bill Gray's Iceplex.
The McKinney goal came at 8:44 of the first period with assists from freshman Johnny Jackson and senior Ray Falso. Less than four minutes later, Gallo gave the Golden Flyers a 2-0 lead as sophomore Matt Echelmeier and junior JT Entelisano each earned assists on the play.
The 2-0 lead at the end of the first period came as Nazareth (0-10-0 overall, 0-10-0 UCHC) held a 15-5 edge in shots for the first 20 minutes.
Less than a minute into the second period, Stevenson (10-2-1, 7-1-1 UCHC) cut the lead in half and Mac Lowery scored an unassisted goal.
Three minutes later, sophomore Joe Brophy answered with an unassisted goal as well to regain the two-goal lead for Nazareth.
Midway through the middle stanza, Stevenson scored a power play goal to trim the lead to 3-2 and just over three minutes later tied the score an another unassisted goal.
The Mustangs took the lead 46 seconds into the third period and added an insurance goal at 13:21 before capping the scoring with a short-handed empty net goal with less than two minutes left to play.
Freshman Raphael Provencher made 26 saves for Nazareth.
Prior to the game six seniors were honored for the Golden Flyers as Falso, Jackson Shanley, Casey Kubara, Connor Davis, Ean Mendeszoon and Mario Capriotti were introduced for the final home game of their careers.
The Golden Flyers will now wait for the final playoff seedings are announced to find out the date and opponent for its next game.
