ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth secured its first women's volleyball victory of the season Wednesday as the Golden Flyers outlasted Alfred in four competitive sets. Scores were 27-25, 22-25, 26-24, 25-21.
The victory evened Nazareth's overall record at 1-1, while Alfred dropped to 2-2 overall.
Junior
McKenzie Hart had a match-best 15 kills to go with three aces and 23 digs. Senior
Julia Cavanaugh added nine kills and sophomore libero
Kelsey Ludwig amassed 26 digs.
Four of Hart's kills came in the first set as Nazareth rallied to win. The Golden Flyers trailed 24-22, but got kills from Hart and
Abby Hannel to tie the score. The teams exchanged points, then Nazareth closed the set with a service ace from
Olivia Quick and a kill from Hart.
After dropping the second set, Nazareth surged to what seemed like a commanding 21-9 lead in the third set. Alfred stormed back behind strong serving by Darian Ortiz and Fiona McNeil and ultimately tied the set at 24-24. Nazareth was able to prevail behind a kill from Hart and an Alfred attack error for the final two points. Hart had six of her kills in the third set.
In the fourth set, Nazareth also secured a commanding advantage as the Golden Flyers led 17-9 following an Alfred service error. Alfred rallied again, this time closing to within 21-19 late in the set. Cavanaugh interrupted the rally with a kill for Nazareth. Quick added another service ace.
Kelly Taylor added a kill and
Eva Lyko closed out the match with a service ace.
Taylor finished with 24 assists, while Quick added 11 with 14 digs. Sarah Raeman led Alfred with 11 kills. Honor Edmands and Rylee Russin each had 10.
The Golden Flyers return to action April 2 for an Empire 8 Conference match at St. John Fisher at 7 p.m.
