POTSDAM. N.Y. -- Proving, perhaps, that the first time was no fluke, host Clarkson scored its second convincing men's lacrosse victory over Nazareth in a week Saturday as the Golden Knights won 16-8 at Hantz Field.
The teams played last Saturday at Nazareth with the Golden Knights prevailing, 18-11. Nazareth dropped to 0-3 overall, while Clarkson evened its overall record at 2-2.
Jeremy Jacob and
Clifford Pollard each scored three goals for the Golden Flyers.
Jon Roth and
Quinn Conroy also tallied.
Pollard scored the game's first goal just over a minute into the action, but Clarkson scored just 10 seconds later to tie the score and to trigger a five-goal scoring spree that featured three straight goals by Bryan Penney and two by Pierce Currie. Jacob scored with :01 left in the quarter to make the score 5-2.
Nazareth scored two of the first three goals of the second quarter to close the gap to 6-4, but Clarkson recovered to lead 9-5 at halftime. First Pollard scored off an assist from
Quinn McKercher and Jacob scored with 5:01 left off an assist from Roth. Nazareth scored again with 2:06 left as Roth converted on an extra-man opportunity, but Clarkson's Billy Bergan scored before halftime.
Clarkson erased any second-half comeback hopes by scoring four more times in the third quarter, including two goals while Nazareth was man-up. Jay Considine had a goal and two assists during that stretch that enabled Clarkson to take a commanding 13-6 lead into the fourth quarter.
Pollard and Conroy converted for Nazareth in the fourth quarter, but Clarkson countered with three more goals to pull away.
Clarkson had advantages in shots (44-38), ground balls (36-23) and face-offs (18-10) and Nazareth managed to score just once in nine extra-man opportunities. Senior
David Walk made his first career start in goals and had seven saves.
Carson Pickeral played the last couple of minutes and had one save. Roth also had nine face-off wins and three ground balls. Jacob, Walk and
Tate Martinez each had three ground balls.
Nazareth is home Wednesday for another non-conference game vs. Ithaca at 3 p.m.
