ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- A 7-2 scoring run over the final two minutes was enough for the University of Rochester to slip past host Nazareth in a non-conference women's basketball game Thursday at the Kidera Gymnasium. UR baskets by Alexis Sestric and Julianna Okoniewski enabled the Yellowjackets to overcome a two-point deficit for a 65-63 win in an exciting game.
The loss dropped the Golden Flyers to 2-2 overall, while Rochester improved to 5-1. Senior
Elizabeth White scored a career-high 16 points for the Golden Flyers. She went 6-for-7 from the field with three three-pointers to go with six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
It was White's three-pointer with 3:07 to go that gave Nazareth a 61-58 advantage. Okoniewski converted a three-point play for UR to tie the score at 61-61 with 2:51 to go.
Jadyn Abrams converted a short jumper for Nazareth with 2:44 to play that enabled Nazareth to regain the lead, but Nazareth didn't score again as UR converted the last two baskets.
Caley Cornwell and
Ryann Stefaniak each missed chances to tie the score in the closing seconds as UR prevailed. UR's Callie McCulley had two of her five blocks during that sequence.
Abrams and Stefaniak each contributed 13 points for Nazareth and junior
Kim Davis added nine points and six rebounds.
Rochester led 17-14 after one quarter and expanded that advantage to 10 points, 28-18, midway through the second quarter. Nazareth, however, wound up scoring the last 11 points of the half, including six points by White, to take a 32-30 lead at the half. Cornwell had a steal and a layup in the closing seconds to break the tie.
The momentum carried over into the third quarter as Nazareth used a 9-1 scoring run in the first four minutes to go up by 10, 41-31. Abrams completed the run with a three-point play. Nazareth stayed ahead, but UR trimmed the lead to four points, 48-44, heading into the fourth quarter.
The game was tied six times in the fourth quarter and featured five lead changes. The Golden Flyers' last-second chances took a hit when Abrams fouled out with :15 left. Nazareth went 24-for-69 from the field (34.8%) for the game with six three-pointers. Nazareth also had a 46-36 rebounding edge with
Sarah Simmons accounting ror a career-high of 13. Four players scored in double digits for the Yellowjackets, led by Okoniewski's 14 points.
Nazareth returns to Empire 8 Conference play Saturday with a game at Keuka at 2 p.m.
