ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting Rochester outscored Nazareth 58-52 in the second half Friday and held off a late charge by the Golden Flyers for a 93-87 men's basketball victory in non-conference action at the Kidera Gymnasium.
In their first basketball action in nearly a year, the Golden Flyers led for a good portion of the first half before Rochester rallied to tie the score at halftime at 35-35. The Yellowjackets dominated most of the second half and led by as many as 16 points, 79-63, with 4:40 left. A frantic Nazareth rally closed the gap to two points with under a minute to play before UR sealed the deal in the closing seconds. UR, playing just its second game, improved to 1-1. Nazareth is 0-1 and hosts Clarkson Wednesday in another non-conference game.
Senior
Kevin Underwood came off the bench to score a career-high 27 points as he made 10 of 15 shots from the field. He also grabbed a team-best seven rebounds. Junior

Stephen Gabel contributed nine points and six assists.
Ryan Algier led Rochester with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Nazareth did well in limiting the 6-foot-10 senior to six points in the first half, but he erupted in the second half and even came away from the basket to hit three three-point baskets. He was one of five Yellowjacket players to score in double figures. C.J. Amsellem came off the bench to add 16 points with four three-pointers.
The game was even statistically in the first half with Underwood fueling Nazareth's offense early with 11 points. The Golden Flyers scored the first basket of the second half, but never led again as UR used a 20-8 scoring run -- featuring a pair of three-point shots by T.C. Price (10 points), one by Trent Noordsij and one by C.J. Amsellem -- to go up by 10, 55-45.
UR maintained its double-digit advantage and the lead grew as large as 16 points, 79-63, following a basket by Algier with 4:40 to go. Nazareth then staged a furious comeback, going on a 21-7 scoring run to pull within two points, 86-84, with less than a minute to play. Three -pointers by

Zach Stenglein and Underwood helped to close the gap. Then after a couple of UR missed shots, Underwood drove to the basket for an old-fashioned three-point play to bring the Golden Flyers within one possession.
UR got a basket by Amsellem on its next possession and then survived by making free throws in the closing seconds. Noordsij made three and Ross Gang added two more to seal the win.
Nazareth made 31 of 70 shots overall (44.3%), including 11 of 34 three-pointers (32.4%). Rochester went 32 for 65 from the field (49.2%), including 18 for 29 (62.1%) in the second half.
