ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Visiting Oswego scored the game-winning goal at 1:15 of overtime Saturday as the Lakers prevailed over Nazareth, 6-5, in a wild non-conference men's hockey game played at the Bill Gray's Iceplex.
Overtime became necessary after Nazareth rallied for four goals in the third period, including two in the final minute of regulation.
The game closed out the first-semester schedule for the Golden Flyers, who stand at 3-7-1 overall. Oswego, also receiving votes in the latest USCHO.com poll, improved to 8-3-1 overall. The game also served as a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society called Hockey Fights Cancer. Nazareth wore special one-time-only jerseys that were auctioned off. Nearly $8,000 was raised.
Ray Falso and
Nick Charron each scored two goals for Nazareth, while Alex DiCarlo and Connor Sleeth tallied twice each for Oswego.
An Oswego power play goal early in the third period gave the Lakers a seemingly safe 5-2 lead, but Nazareth got a goal from
Anthony Quinlivan at 14:12 to make the score 5-3.
Nazareth pulled goaltender
Matt Sayles in the closing minute in favor of an extra skater and the Golden Flyers capitalized twice. Charron's first goal came at 19:14 with assists from Falso and
Carmine Alberga.
The Golden Flyers then forced overtime in improbable fashion. A face-off, featuring
Mitch Culver for Nazareth, in the Oswego zone with just :03 remaining directed the puck back to Charron, who sent a wrist shot into the upper left corner of the goal just before time expired.
Next up was a 3-on-3 overtime in which the Lakers won the game on a goal by Ryan Dickinson with an assist from DiCarlo.
DiCarlo scored twice for Oswego before the game was five minutes old for a 2-0 advantage, but Nazareth countered with a goal by Falso at 6:25.
Oswego scored two more goals in the second period – both by Sleeth -- to go up 4-1.
Falso scored again for Nazareth early in the third period, but Oswego regained its three-goal lead less than two minutes later as Rocco Andreacchi scored on the power play. That set the stage for the final frantic minutes with Nazareth scoring three times.
Sayles went the distance in goal for the Golden Flyers and finished with 30 saves.
The Golden Flyers are off now until Jan. 7 when they host Cortland in a non-conference game at 7 p.m.
