ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting Cortland scored six straight goals over the second and third periods Friday against Nazareth as the Red Dragons rallied for a 7-3 men's hockey victory over the Golden Flyers at the Bill Gray's Regional Iceplex.
Cortland improved to 9-4-1 overall with the non-conference victory, while Nazareth, playing for the first time in 27 days, dropped to 3-8-1 overall. The Golden Flyers are home again Tuesday against Geneseo at 7 p.m.
Mitch Culver scored two goals and assisted on the third goal for the Golden Flyers. Freshman
Ethan Louisos scored his first career goal in the second period.
The Golden Flyers benefited greatly from a two-man, five-minute advantage that bridged the first and second periods. A.J. Przystawski and Nate Berke each were assessed five-minute major penalties for facemasking and checking from behind respectively. They also drew game misconducts.
Nazareth capitalized by scoring twice to take a 3-1 lead early in the second period. Culver scored with just :04 left in the first period with an assist by
Cole Moore. Then in the third period, with Nazareth still skating 5-on-3, Louisos scored with assists from Culver and
Johnny Jackson to give Nazareth a two-goal advantage.
Cortland dominated from there as the Red Dragons came back to score twice within a 50-second span late in the second period and added four more goals in the third period.
Goals by Ethan Homitz and Matt Jahn tied the score before the second period ended. A goal by Michael Sciore early in the third period broke the deadlock and gave Cortland the lead for good at 4-3.
An insurance goal came at 14:28 by Trevor Veneklase. The Red Dragons then tacked on a pair of empty-net goals in a 30-second stretch in the closing minutes to seal the win.
Culver's first goal of the game at 6:40 of the opening period put the Golden Flyers on top 1-0 as
Ray Falso and
Liam Beaudoin assisted. Berke tied the score for Cortland 10 minutes later before he left the game.
Nazareth had a 42-40 edge in shots, but Cortland had a 17-10 advantage in the third period. Freshman
David Reduzzi made the start in goal and had 33 saves. Luca Durante had 39 saves for Cortland.
