Jadyn Abrams led all scorers with 26 points and seniors
Kim Davis and
Miyah Sizer also scored in double digits as Nazareth opened its 2021-22 women's basketball season in successful fashion with a 77-57 victory over Medaille in non-conference action.
Abrams overcame a slow shooting start to make 9 of 21 shots from the field, including 5 of 13 from three-point range. She also grabbed seven rebounds. Davis went 6-for-10 from the field and also grabbed seven rebounds and Sizer made three baskets, including one three-pointer. Sophomore
Chelsea Woodsum came off the bench to score nine points and to grab five rebounds.
Nazareth led 18-11 after one quarter and 32-22 at halftime. The Golden Flyers broke the game open with a 25-10 third-quarter run that featured four three-pointers by Abrams and one by senior
Caley Cornwell, who finished with five points, five rebounds and eight assists. Nazareth's starting lineup also included grad student
Sabrina Wolfe, a transfer from RIT who contributed six points and six rebounds.
Nazareth went just 7-for-22 from the field in the first quarter, but the accuracy improved after that. In the second half, the Golden Flyers went 16-for-32 overall and 7-for-14 from three-point range.
The Golden Flyers are on the road this weekend for the Nor'easter Tip-Off Classic at the University of New England in Maine. Nazareth plays Bowdoin Saturday at 3 p.m. and Colby Sunday at 1 p.m.
