BIDDEFORD, ME – The Nazareth College Women's Basketball team battled back from a slow start but a third quarter run for Bowdoin, ranked #13 in the latest D3hoops.com national poll, allowed the Polar Bears to take a lead and take a 65-44 win in the opening round of the Nor'easter Tip-off Classic at the Harold Alfon Forum.
Both teams struggled shooting in the first quarter and Nazareth (1-1 overall) was held to just seven points and trailed 12-7 after the first 10 minutes of action.
The second quarter saw the Golden Flyers play much better and Nazareth took a 15-12 lead with an early run as senior Kim Davis and graduate student Sabrina Wolfe each scoring points. A layup by senior Caley Cornwell made it a 17-14 Nazareth lead but Bowdoin (1-0) answered with a 7-0 run to regain the lead and held a 21-19 edge at halftime.
The teams traded baskets early in the second half before the Polar Bears broke free on a 11-0 run to take a 16-point lead at 40-24.
A basket by senior Jadyn Abrams early in the fourth quarter cut the lead to 12 points at 47-35 but Bowdoin rallied for a 6-0 run to regain control and cruise to the victory.
Nazareth was limited to 31.4 percent shooting (16-for-51) for the game and committed 27 turnovers.
Davis led Nazareth with 13 points and eight rebounds and Abrams scored 11 and Wolfe added eight for Nazareth.
The Golden Flyers will face Colby who won a 61-60 decision over University of New England earlier Saturday.
