Comeback Falls Short in Consolation Loss

BIDDEFORD, ME – Seniors Sabrina Wolfe, Jadyn Abrams and Caley Cornwell each scored in double figures for the Nazareth College Women's Basketball team and the Golden Flyers used a 9-2 run early in the fourth quarter to get close but Colby College held on for a 59-53 victory Sunday in the consolation game of the Nor'easter Tip=off Classic at the University of New England.

Nazareth (1-2) scored 19 points in the opening quarter to take an early lead but managed just four points in the second period but still trailed Colby (2-0) but just three points at the halftime intermission.

The Mules poured in 22 points in the third quarter and built an eight-point advantage heading into the final quarter.

Colby scored the first points of the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer before Abrams and Wolfe sparked a run for the Golden Flyers to close the gap. Abrams hit a pair of free throws and Wolfe connected on a 3-pointer and a layup to trim the lead to six points at 53-47.

The teams traded baskets over the final minutes as Colby was able to hold on for the win.

Abrams led Nazareth with 11 points, Wolfe and Cornwell scored 10 points each while Wolfe and Abrams grabbed seven rebounds each. Cornwell had six rebounds and senior Kim Davis added seven points and six rebounds

Nazareth  returns to action this week with games on Thursday and Saturday in the annual Mark's Pizzeria Classic at St. John Fisher. The Golden Flyers will face Rochester Thursday and RIT Saturday with both games starting at 6 p.m. at Fisher.
