ROCHESTER, NY – Senior Caley Cornwell led three players in double figures scoring with her team-high 14 points for the Nazareth College Women's Basketball team but it was not enough as RIT took an early lead and held off the Golden Flyers for a 72-61 win Saturday night on the second night of play in the Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout at St. John Fisher.
Cornwell led the team with 14 points and seven rebounds while fellow senior Jadyn Abrams added 12 points and graduate student Sabrina Wolfe chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds= for Nazareth (1-4)
RIT (1-1) jumped out to an early lead at 11-4 in the first five minutes and held a 20-12 lead after one period of play.
In the second quarter, Nazareth trimmed the lead and took a 25-24 lead on a Cornwell 3-pointer midway through the period. A layup by junior Miyah Sizer gave Nazareth a 27-24 lead but the Tigers answered with an 11-2 run to end the half and took a 35-29 lead into the break.
The teams traded baskets in the third quarter as RIT led 51-44 after 30 minutes.
An 8-2 run in the fourth quarter extended the lead and Nazareth was unable to cut further into the advantage.
Kaleesha Joseph led all scorers with 33 points for RIT and Sydney Pearson also scored 18 for the Tigers.
Nazareth is off until after the Thanksgiving break and will host Cazenovia December 1 with a 7 p.m. game in Kidera Gym.
