PITTSBURGH -- Host Chatham broke open a close men's hockey Saturday by scoring late in the second period and twice in the third for a 5-2 victory over Nazareth in United Collegiate Hockey Conference action.
It was the first win of the season for Chatham, now 1-2 overall. Nazareth dropped a tough overtime decision to Stevenson Friday and dropped to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in the UCHC. The Golden Flyers are back home Friday to play Utica at the Billy Gray's Iceplex at 7 p.m.
Nazareth had a 48-31 edge in shots on goal, but Cougars' netminder Ricardo Gonzalez made 46 saves with 21 coming in the second period.
With the game tied at 2-2 midway through the second period, Chatham scored the go-ahead goal at 14:01 of the second period and then scored in the opening minute of the third period to take a 4-2 lead. The Cougars added an empty-net goal with less than a minute to play for the final margin.
Henry McKinney and
Anthony Quinlivan scored for the Golden Flyers. McKinney scored at 5:52 of the opening period with assists from linemates
Ryan Turse and
Keith Davenport, but Chatham tied the score just over a minute later.
Chatham went up 2-1 with a goal late in the period, but Quinlivan scored at 8:09 of the second with assists from
Liam Quinlivan and
Carmine Alberga to tie the score again.
The Cougars did the rest of the scoring and were heavily supported by Gonzalez, who denied the Golden Flyers time and again. Nazareth also went 0-for-4 on the power play. Freshman
Matt Sayles was in goal for the Golden Flyers for the second night in a row and was credited with 19 saves.
