Golden Flyers fall at Stevenson in overtime, 6-5

Nazareth (2-3 overall) visits Chatham Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

REISTERTOWN, Md. -- Host Stevenson scored the game-winning goal at 2:19 of overtime Friday as the Mustangs upended the Golden Flyers in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference game, 6-5.

Michael Houlihan and Johnny Jackson each had a goal and an assist in the see-saw battle for the Golden Flyers, who dropped to 2-3-0 overall and 2-1 in UCHC games. Nazareth plays against Saturday at Chatham at 5:30 p.m.

Nazareth rallied from deficits of 2-1, 4-2 and 5-4 to force the extra three-on-three overtime period. Stevenson's Ryan Patrick was credited with the game-winner against Nazareth freshman goaltender Matt Sayles, who finished with 20 saves.

Sayles was on the bench in the closing minutes of regulation play in favor of an extra skater and the Golden Flyers cashed in on the 6-on-4 power play opportunity as Cole Moore delivered his second goal of the season on a shot from the point to square the game at 5-5. Houlihan was credited with an assist.

Nazareth scored first on Anthony Quinlivan's first career goal at 2:33 of the opening period. Stevenson came back to take a 2-1 advantage before period's end. Jackson delivered a power play tally at 8:20 of the second period to tie the score, but Stevenson's Frank Vitucci scored the next two goals -- one on the power play late in the second period and the second at even strength early in the third period to give the Mustangs a 4-2 lead.

Goals by Keith Davenport and Houlihan evened things up again with Jackson gaining an assist on the tying goal. Stevenson regained the lead again to set the stage for Moore's tying goal that followed a Stevenson minor penalty for too many men on the ice.

Nazareth had a 29-26 edge in shots on goal and went 1-for-3 on the power play.

"It was a tough loss, but I though our guys battled hard til the end," said Nazareth Coach George Roll. The teams play again Jan. 30 at the Bill Gray's Iceplex.
