ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The visitors from William Smith dominated the action from start to finish Tuesday as the Herons turned in a 3-0 field hockey victory over Nazareth on the Golden Flyers' artificial turf field.
Benefiting from a whopping 36-2 advantage in shots and a 14-2 edge in penalty corners, the Herons improved their record to 4-6 overall with the non-conference victory. Nazareth dropped to 3-6.
The Golden Flyers were able to fend off William Smith in the first quarter, but the Herons finally broke through with a pair of goals in the second quarter. Rebecca Mantione scored at 18:36 by deflecting in a rebound from Mackenzie Wodka. Sydney Foster scored her first goal of the season two minutes later. Wodka added the Herons' third goal in the fourth quarter as she tipped in a shot from the stick of McKenna Williams.
Nazareth's only bona fide scoring chance came in the third quarter as the Golden Flyers worked the ball into the offensive circle, where a shot by
Hannah Janes was steered aside by Herons' goalkeeper Brit Foster.
Senior
Amanda Chuttey played another stellar game in goal for Nazareth in making 19 saves. She also was assisted by three defensive saves by Nazareth players. Senior
Mya Maloof had one in the first quarter, freshman
Maddie Young in the third and freshman
Madison Chodkowski in the fourth.
The Golden Flyers are on the road for a pair of games this weekend. They visit Rensselaer Friday at 4 p.m. for a non-conference game and then travel to Utica Sunday for an Empire 8 Conference game at 1 p.m.
