ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore Matt Lakus and senior Mitch Culver scored in each of the first two periods for a 2-0 lead but the Nazareth College Men's Hockey team surrendered four power play goals and dropped a 4-2 decision to Elmira in the first game of the season at Bill Gray's Iceplex.
Lakus scored on a power play for Nazareth (0-1) with five minutes left in the opening period for the early lead and Culver added his goal on an even strength situation five minutes into the second period to boost the Golden Flyer lead to 2-0.
Elmira (1-0) responded with its first extra man goal with five minutes remaining in the second period to cut the lead in half and tied the score 51 seconds into the third period on another power play opportunity.
Just 38 seconds later, the Soaring Eagles took the lead with another extra man goal and added yet another power play goal at the 7:42 mark to make it a 4-2 lead.
Freshman Matt Sayles played all 60 minutes in the Nazareth goal and made 38 saves including 18 in the second period.
Nazareth continues early season action Saturday at SUNY Geneseo with a 7 p.m. game.
