Balanced Attack and Solid Defense Keeps Rugby Undefeated

ROCHESTER, NY – Six different players scored trys and the Nazareth College Rugby team, ranked #20 in the latest National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) National Poll, remained unbeaten as the Golden Flyers downed SUNY Cortland 40-12 Saturday on the Upper Field in front of another supportive crowd.

Junior Kyle Decker got things started in the first three minutes of the game as he capped an outside run and raced in for the try. After the conversion kick, Nazareth (4-0) took the 7-0 lead.

Cortland answered a few minutes later with an intercepted pass and run in for the try and tied the score at 7-7.

Junior Dylan Swincicki picked up the loose ball after a Cortland fumble and fellow junior Curtis Raeford bulled his way in for the try and a 14-7 Golden Flyer lead.

Freshman Brendan O'Neill, who kicked the first two conversions, gave Nazareth a 21-7 lead as he ran one in for the try and added the kick with just a few minutes before the end of the first half.

Before the end of the half, freshman Thomas Tompkins scored his second try of the season as he plowed in from a short distance out and despite a missed conversion kick, gave Nazareth a 26-7 lead at the halftime break.

The teams battled back and forth for the first several minutes of the second half before Cortland narrowed the gap with a long drive and try to cut the lead to 26-12 with 17 minutes left to play.

A little more than 10 minutes later sophomore Jonah Clarke used his size and speed to break through for a try and fellow sophomore Patrick Notaro added the kick for a 33-12 lead.

The speedy sophomore Tyreik Thomas capped the scoring with a try and Notaro conversion gave the Golden Flyers a final 40-12 advantage.

Nazareth will have a week off and return to action October 16 at University of Buffalo before the Golden Flyers host Syracuse University the following Saturday to end the regular season.
