Women’s Soccer Comes Back for Empire 8 Road Win

ALBANY, NY – Junior Geena Morotti scored late in the second half off a direct kick play and led the Nazareth College Women's Soccer team to a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Russell Sage Saturday in an Empire 8 game played at Albany College of Pharmacy Stadium.

After a scoreless first half, Sage (5-7-2 overall, 1-3-1 E8) opened the scoring with a long shot from near midfield that bounced in front of Nazareth (6-5-3, 5-0-0 E8) goalie freshman goalie Annika Monfort and over her head into the back of the goal.

Just two minutes later, a Sage player was whistled for a hand ball in the box and graduate student Kristen Prohaska scored on the penalty kick with a hard shot into the left side of the goal to tie the game.

Each team had scoring chances in the closing minutes of the game but it was a foul just outside the box at the Sage end of the field that set up the winning goal.

Freshman Haley Glassman sent a pass to Morotti who was at the top of the box and 20 yards out and she blasted a shot toward the goal that deflected off the head of a defender and into the back of the net for the go-ahead goal with 2:06 left to play.

Nazareth finished with a 14-9 edge in shots and a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal and each team had three corner kicks in the contest. Monfort finished with three saves to earn the victory.

The Golden Flyers return home to face St. John Fisher in Empire 8 action Wednesday at 4 p.m. and will host Hartwick at 1:30 pm. Saturday in a conference game.
