FORT MYERS, FL – Senior Mackenzie Kapp was 1-for-3 with a run batted in in the first game and seniors Kristen Simmons and Jessica Mount combined for four hits while senior Kylie Smith tossed six solid innings but the Nazareth College softball team lost a pair of games Friday on the final day of the Florida trip.
After the announcement of the cancellation of the remaining spring schedule earlier in the day, the team conducted an impromptu senior day ceremony following the game against Oneonta as the season essentially came to a close.
Nazareth (1-9) dropped an 8-1 decision to Crown (Minn) in the first game and fell to Oneonta 7-1 in the second game of the day.
Against Crown, junior Janelle Walters was 1-for-4 with a run scored and Kapp had the hit and RBI for the Golden Flyers.
Nazareth scored in the bottom of the sixth inning as Walters connected on a bunt single in front of the plate to start the inning and Kapp followed with a double to the fence in left centerfield to score Walters.
Crown scored three times in the first and added three more in the third to take a 6-0 lead, After Nazareth scored in the sixth, the Storm added a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning to close out the scoring.
In the second game of the day, Nazareth finished with seven hits including two by both Simmons and Mount. Freshman Leah Simon was 1-for-3 with a run scored and sophomore Jessica Klem was 1-for-2 with a run batted in.
Oneonta scored single runs in the second and third innings before Nazareth cut the lead in half with its lone run in the bottom of the third inning.
Simon opened the third with a double down the right field line and took third with a single by Mount. Klem reached base on a fielder's choice play that allowed Simon to score from third.
The Red Dragons added a pair of runs in the fifth and finished the game with three runs in the seventh for the final score.
