FORT MYERS, FL – Junior Janelle Walters had a pair of hits in the first game and sophomore Allison Smith had two hits in the second game but the Nazareth College softball team dropped a pair of games Tuesday as the Golden Flyers fell 8-0 to Wilmington (Ohio) and then lost a 4-1 decision to Curry at the Century Sports Complex.
Nazareth (0-6) allowed just a solo home run through the first two innings against Wilimington (4-1) but the Quakers exploded for six runs in the third including a three-run triple by Ja'Taysia Johns who also hit the solo home run in the second inning.
After the big inning, senior starter Kylie Smith retired seven of the next 10 batters for a pair of shutout innings through the fourth and fifth innings before Wilmington scored the eighth run of the game in the sixth to end the game with the run rule.
Walters had two hits while Kristen Simmons, Katherine Ruoff and Allison Smith all contributed a hit to the Nazareth offense.
In the second game of the day, Nazareth jumped out to an early lead as Aubrin Smith drew a two-out walk in the top of the first and scored on a Simmons double to right-center field that went all the way to the fence.
Curry (2-4) tied the game with a home run from the first batter in the bottom of the first and the game remained tied at 1-1 until the fourth inning.
The Colonels added an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead.
The Golden Flyers threatened in the top of the fifth as Allison Smith singled to start the inning and took second on a sacrifice bunt before the next two batters were retired.
Curry added two more unearned runs in the sixth to stretch the lead to 4-1 before Nazareth was retired in the seventh to end the game.
Allison Smith had two of the four hits for Nazareth as Simmons added her run-scoring double and Mackenzie Kapp also had a hit for the Golden Flyers.
Nazareth is off Wednesday but returns to action Thursday against Alfred State and Curry at 9 and 11 am in Naples.
Western Connecticut State was scheduled to play Nazareth but the school canceled all Spring Break travel forcing the cancellation of the game and forcing the tournament organizers to reset the schedules.
